Vi har de siste årene bragt våre erfaringer til andre europeiske partnere, som i 2015 ledet til en lærermanual som nå er en del av pensum for ungdomsskolen på Kypros.

På Europadagen 9. mai lanserer vi en 8-minutters dokumentar om samarbeidet mellom Sex og Politikk og vår kypriotiske søsterorganisasjon Cyprus Family Planning Association (CFPA): Implementing Mandatory Sexuality Education for Teens (I’MSET). I 2015 ble samarbeidsprosjektet mellom Sex og Politikk i Norge og Cyprus Family Planning Association på Kypros ferdigstilt. Ved prosjektets lansering presenterte daglig leder i Sex og Politikk resultatene på en pressekonferanse på Europakommisjonen i EU-huset på Kypros, i samarbeid med Europaparlamentets nasjonale informasjonskontor og kypriotiske partnere.

Prosjektet var finansiert av EØS-midler og involverte samarbeid mellom sivilsamfunn, utdanningsmyndigheter, lærerutdanningen og barneombudet på Kypros sammen med Sex og Politikk. I tillegg til godt samarbeid mellom ulike aktører, var innhenting av data og forskning og at unge ble hørt og fikk medvirke vektlagt. Sex og Politikk bidro med sin erfaring fra utvikling av seksualitetsundervisningsmateriellet Uke 6 og arbeid med seksuelle rettigheter i Norge. Prosjektet resulterte i en undervisningsmanual for lærere, «Teacher’s Manual for delivering Comprehensive Sexuality Education», som nå er del av pensum for ungdomsskolen (middle school) på Kypros.

Etter at materiellet var godkjent dro Sex og Politikk til Kypros for å dokumentere prosjektet. Kortfilmen vi viser på Europadagen er resultatet av denne dokumentasjonen. Vi intervjuet våre samarbeidspartnere i CFPA og andre aktører som var involvert i prosjektet. Særlig vekt la vi på å snakke med ungdommer som hadde fått seksualitetsundervisning ved bruk av manualen og lærere som har benyttet den. Ungdommene var opptatt av at seksualitet lenge har vært tabubelagt på Kypros og at det har vært og er et stort behov for helhetlig seksualitetsundervisning. De ungdommene som hadde erfaring med I’MSET la blant annet vekt på at oppgavene som ble benyttet i materiellet fikk dem til å reflektere over kjønnsnormer knyttet til seksualitet.

Formålet med filmen er å vise hvordan bilateralt samarbeid om seksualitetsundervisning og seksuell og reproduktiv helse og rettigheter kan gjennomføres. Sex og Politikk og Cyprus Family Planning Association har spilt på hverandres styrker og lært av hverandres erfaringer. CFPA kjenner den kypriotiske konteksten og lokale aktører, mens SoP har lang erfaring med utvikling av materiell til seksualitetsundervisning i skolen (Uke 6).

Filmen fra prosjektet som vi lanserer på Europadagen håper vi vil inspirere flere organisasjoner og land til å kopiere dette vellykkede samarbeidet. Helhetlig seksualitetsundervisning er sentralt for at barn og unge skal få et godt forhold til sin egen kropp og egen seksualitet og identitet, samt å ta gode valg for seg selv og sammen med andre. Som en av de kypriotiske ungdommene i dokumentaren sier: ”Don’t demonize sex. Don’t make us afraid of it!”

On Europe Day May 9, an 8-minute documentary about the collaboration project between Sex og Politikk and its sister organisation Cyprus Family Planning Association (CFPA) – Implementing Mandatory Sexuality Education for Teens (I’MSET) – is launched. The collaboration project between Sex og Politikk and Cyprus Family Planning Association was finalized in 2015 in Cyprus. At the project’s launch, Sex og Politikk’s Executive Director, Tor-Hugne Olsen, presented the project’s results at a press conference with the European Commission at the EU House in Cyprus, in collaboration with the national communication office of the European parliament and partners from Cyprus.

The project was financed by EEA and included collaboration between Sex og Politikk, Cyprus Family Planning Association, the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in Cyprus, the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus and the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS). In addition to collaborating successfully, the focus of the project was on collecting data and research and ensuring active youth participation. Sex og Politikk contributed with its long experience from developing material for comprehensive sexuality education used in schools in Norway, “Uke 6”, and its work with sexual rights. The project resulted in “Teacher’s Manual for delivering Comprehensive Sexuality Education”, which has since been included in the curriculum for middle school in Cyprus.

After the ”Teacher’s Manual for delivering Comprehensive Sexuality Education” had been approved as a part of the curriculum, Sex og Politikk travelled to Cyprus to document the project. The short documentary film is the result of this trip. Sex og Politikk interviewed the partners in CFPA and other actors involved in the project. The focus was on talking to youth who have received comprehensive sexuality education with the help of the manual and to teachers who have used the manual. The youth expressed the need for comprehensive sexuality education in Cyprus, where sexuality has been a taboo for a long time. They emphasised the tasks in the I’MSET material which inspired them to reflect on gender norms related to sexuality.

The purpose of the film is to show a successful bilateral collaboration about comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health and rights. Sex og Politikk and Cyprus Family Planning Association have drawn on each other’s strengths and have learned from each other’s experiences. CFPA is familiar with the context and the local actors in Cyprus, while Sex og Politikk has long experience with developing material for comprehensive sexuality education in schools.

We hope that the documentary about the I’MSET project will inspire other organisations and countries to copy this successful collaboration. Comprehensive sexuality education is central for children and youth to develop healthy relationships to their own bodies, sexuality and identity, as well as their ability to make good choices for themselves and others. As one of the Cypriot youth expressed: “Don’t demonize sex. Don’t make us afraid of it!”
