Lulu Ng’wanakilala, daglig leder i vår søsterorganisasjon UMATI fra Tanzania, vil presentere UMATI og deres arbeid med seksuell og reproduktiv helse og rettigheter (SRHR) i Tanzania, meg fokus på ungdomsinnretning i rådgivningen deres, seksualitetsundervisning og helhetlig behandling etter abort.

Tanzania vil i mai presentere situasjonen for menneskerettigheter i landet for FNs nye menneskerettighetsprosess Universal Periodic Review (UPR). Sex og Politikk og våre søsterorganisasjoner i vårt internasjonale nettverkInternational Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) er opptatt at menneskerettigheter knyttet seksualitet og reproduksjon inkluderes i UPR høringene. Sex og Politikk lagde en skyggerapport da Norge presenterte for UPR i 2014, og det siste halvåret har vi fulgt prosessene til Malawi og Nepal sammen med våre søsterorganisasjoner der.

Lulu har kommet til Europa for å sikre støtte for de forslagene som UMATI og andre organisasjoner i Tanzania fremmer i sin skyggerapport til UPR prosessen, med spesiell vekt på tilgangen til lovlige og trygge aborter. UMATI driver 10 permanente klinikker og utfra disse mobile klinikker og lokale helsestasjoner i forskjellige deler av Tanzania, hvorfra de fokuserer på seksuell og reproduktiv helse, spesielt i forhold til ungdommer. Det drives i tillegg egne ungdomssentre. Men i motsetning til IPPFs klinikker i nabolandet Mosambik kan ikke UMATI tilby abort til sine pasienter. De kan imidlertid tilby hjelp til utskrapninger til kvinner som har foretatt ulovlige aborter, men ser at dette altfor ofte er for sent og mange kvinner mister livet. Liv som kunne vært spart. Lulu vil fortelle om utfordringene de har og har hatt og seirene de allerede har vunnet. Den viktigste har vært i forhold til å sikre at tilbudet ved klinikkene har blitt ungdomsvennlig, noe som var vanskelig, men som idag er standard ved alle klinikkene. Du kan lese mer om UMATI her.

Members’ meeting with UMATI’s (IPPF Tanzania) executive director

We invite you to an open members’ meeting at our premises in Christian Kroghs gate 34 Thursday March 31^st at 17.30h – 19.30h.

Lulu Ng’wanakilala, executive director in our sister organisation UMATI from Tanzania, will present UMATI and its work with sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Tanzania, with a focus on the counselling work for the youth, sexuality education and comprehensive post abortion care.

Tanzania will present the human rights situation in the country for UN’s new human rights process «Universal Periodic Review» (UPR) in May 2016. Sex og Politikk and our sister organisations in our international network International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) are advocating for inclusion of human rights linked to sexuality and reproduction in the UPR hearings. Sex og Politikk prepared a report when Norway presented at UPR in 2014, and we have in the last 6 months followed the processes of Malawi and Nepal together with our sister organisations in these countries.

Lulu is coming to Europe to ensure the support for proposals that UMATI and other organisations in Tanzania promote in their report for the UPR hearing, particularly on access to legal and safe abortion. UMATI runs ten permanent clinics, as well as mobile clinics and local health centres in different parts of Tanzania, where they focus on sexual and reproductive health, especially for youth. UMATI also runs its own youth centres. But unlike IPPF’s clinics in the neighbouring country Mozambique, UMATI’ s clinics cannot perform abortions. They perform curettage on patients who have had an illegal abortion, but all too often too late, which causes death of many patients as a consequence of complications after an illegal abortion. These lives could be saved. Lulu will tell about the challenges UMATI have been facing, and victories they have already won. The most important victory has been to make the clinics youth friendly, something that is not easy, but that has become a standard at all UMATI’s clinics.

The meeting is a part of Sex og Politikk’s series of meetings about the SRHR situation in the 12 focus countries for Norwegian development aid. Earlier we had guests from our sister organisations in Nepal and Palestine, and we reported from our visits to Ethiopia, Malawi and Tanzania.
