Background
There is an increased focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights in humanitarian crisis. However, it is still being overlooked by major actors. Conflict has dire consequences on women and girls’ sexual and reproductive health and rights. According to the UN, the maternal mortality rate is 60% higher in conflict and post-conflict countries than the global ratio of 210 deaths per 100,000 live births. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), sixty per cent of preventable maternal deaths take place among women struggling to survive conflicts, natural disasters and displacement.

Pregnant women need health care – also in situation of crisis. Women in refugee camps are more exposed to sexual abuse. Men and women have consensual sex – even when they are fleeing. These are situations when many become involuntarily pregnant, possibly risking their own health. It is therefore important to both plan for sexual and reproductive health measures before the crisis and ensure access to health services and contraceptives during the crisis. With the support of the Norwegian government and others, UNFPA offers a minimum package to secure sexual and reproductive health in emergencies, the Minimum Initial Standard Package (MISP). This conference will contribute to increased knowledge on the need, challenges in and possibilities for improved implementation of MISP and other ways of ensuring access to sexual and reproductive health and rights.
