Arendalsuka: We Belong Together – Improving Access to SRHR in Malawi
How do we improve sexual rights in Malawi? Sex og Politikk will facilitate a talk between FPAM and Norwegian politicians on how we approach this issue.
Bjørg Sandkjær, State Secretary, and Heidi Nordby Lunde, Member of Parliament, will participate in a dialogue on the importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights in Malawi and for Norwegian development policy. They have both visited Malawi and have a strong interest in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Heidi Nordby Lunde is the former chair of the all-party-parliamentary-group on sexual and reproductive health rights (Stortingets SRHR-nettverk).
Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) and Sex og Politikk are both members associations of International Planned Parenthood Federation. Our partnership includes our newly started project: We belong together (WBT) – Improving Access to Quality SRHR Information and Services among marginalized Women, Girls and LGBTI persons in Mzimba North and Dowa Districts, Malawi.
Maternal mortality remains high in Malawi – 547 out 100,000 mothers die of pregnancy related causes each year. 17 percent of these deaths are due to complications after unsafe abortions. Sex between men in Malawi is illegal and punishable with up to 14 years in prison.
Donald Makwakwa and Esther Moya from FPAM will share experiences from improving access to SRHR information and services to girls and women including the LGBTI community in these hard-to-reach areas.
Following FPAM’s presentation, Sex og Politikk will facilitate a talk between FPAM, Bjørg Sandkjær (Centre Party) and Heidi Nordby Lunde (Conservative Party) on how to improve sexual and reproductive health and rights in Malawi.
